Happy Birthday Canada! Celebrating 145 years on July 1, 2012

Oh Canada, there is no better way to celebrate Canada Day than to start off singing the National Anthem. It’s a sad reality that a great deal of Canadians don’t actually know the lyrics so here it is, sign it loud, sign it proud, for our nation, our people, and for yourselves.

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!

From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

Now that I have made everyone in my hearing distance shut their windows cause they can’t stand the sound of my voice, let’s move on to something I seem to have some talent in which is food. I tried to think of some great celebration types of meals, and of course barbecuing came to mind, along with some Daiquiri’s, and desserts. What types of foods do you find sitting at your table on days like Canada Day? I would love to hear some of your celebratory events.

We should probably start with appetizers and as a starter I have picked,

Ricotta Prosciutto Triscuit Bites: They are so quick and easy to make, they will keep you and your guests entertained until the main course is ready giving you plenty of time to enjoy your events, family and friends.

If you are looking for an amazing dip appetizer to share with your guests you should take a look at what Malibu Kitchen has twirling in her food processor. Its a beautiful flavoured Smoked Salmon and Dill Dip, that will keep your guests circled around what ever table you set it on.

We couldn’t celebrate Canada Day without a burger for the grill on the main menu so I opted for a,

Turkey, Chicken Burger: Has a healthier side to it, instead of a traditional beef burger, give a turkey chicken burger a try, and see how everyone will love them even more than a well-known beef burger, especially since they won’t feel so weighted down after eating this light and healthier version of a burger.

Nothing says Canadian like a Pulled Pork Sandwich, perfect for bringing on a picnic, chilled till its time  to eat.

I have a couple of great side dishes to share with you, that I think would go perfect with any type of BBQ entrée. First we have Barbecued White Sweet Potato Fries: they are so delicious you better buy enough for everyone.

Next we have a Potato Toss Salad: This potato salad is a staple at any BBQ gathering and not to mention Canada is known for growing some of the best potatoes.

Make sure you offer all the variety your guests can imagine, and include another over the top Mustard Potato Salad from and created by Kitchen Riffs, it boast’s of beautiful vibrant colour and the creaminess is more than mouth-watering intriguing. Take a look and give it a try as well.

We can’t forget to add in a pasta salad somewhere in this list like, Veggie Tiny Rotini Pasta Salad: I love pasta salads because they can easily be a side dish or a main with an added sliced barbecued chicken breast, it’s summer all in one dish.

Now last but not least for the sides, I have chosen to share Bocconcini & Tomato Salad: This salad is a great choice not only for its great fresh taste, but also because of its festive red and white colours that go beautifully when celebrating Canada Day.

Now for my Favourite part naturally its dessert. If I didn’t have such an opinion on being healthy I would skip all the food and go straight for dessert, maybe in a different life I’ll get blessed with a body that doesn’t gain a pound no matter what I eat :)

First up I got Mini Cherry Cheese Cakes perfect for us who want just a little taste with out all the guilt strung along with it. They really are perfectly satisfying.

Next up are some super quick, easy, and guilt free Coco Cocoa Date Balls, they have chocolate written all over them, but made with delicious and sweet dates making them a perfect little treat for after a BBQ, when you may be feeling overly full from the selection, but you still have a craving for something little and sweet to indulge in.

This next dessert has all the right colour for celebrating Canada Day, and all the refreshing flavours making it a perfect ending to any party gathering. Mint Mascarpone Strawberry Coconut Short Cakes. Made into a perfect mini size pleasing everyone and their dogs.

I don’t experiment a whole lot with different drinks, I usually head straight for the wine fridge when celebrating a special event. One of my little favourite drinks is a simple sparkling white wine, or even a Peele Island white with some fresh added to it, such as black berries, raspberries, strawberries even fresh juicy peaches, mix it up in a pitcher serve it chilled, and enjoy a small cocktail of fresh juicy wine fruit at the end. It’s like a double reward.

I hope you all enjoy Canada Day this year, hopefully the weather will co-operate for us, and enjoy the many feasts, fireworks and whatever special events you have planned for you, family and friends.

Happy Canada Day Everyone!!!!!!
